One of the biggest reasons why Backpacking in Asia is so popular, is because you can visit all year round, and it’s not going to be cold and you can expect to have some good weather. The weather does vary a lot throughout the whole of Asia, but the best time to travel is during the end and beginning of the year. Don’t get us wrong, it rains in Asia sometimes too.

Believe it or not, most of our groups consist of mainly people travelling on their own rather than with friends. What we love about our trips though is that it doesn’t really matter! Whether your on your own, travelling as a couple or in a group of friends, everyone seems to become one big family by the first couple of days of the trip. We also try to make that bond happen even earlier as we create groups on our Facebook page closer to the time of the start date, so you can connect with others on the same trip before it even starts.Which ever way you do it, you will for sure be coming away after the trip with a group of amazing new friends for life!

There are limited dates and availability on our trips and if the date that you are looking at is full then please contact us here and we will do our best to find you a spot. No promises…but we will do our best 🙂

WHEN DO I NEED TO PAY FOR MY TRIP?

We have 2 different types of payments that you can make;

Full Payment

You can find yourself a start date for a particular tour here and complete the booking by paying in full. This means other than Flights, and Travel Insurance you are pretty much ready to go.

Deposit Payment

Alternatively, you can put down a small deposit of £49 per person on a particular start date, this will guarantee your place on the trip of your choice. When you are ready to pay off the rest of your trip let us know and we can help.

Remember…Full payment must be made no later than 60 days before your start date.

WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL AGES OF PEOPLE ON THE TRIP?

The average age of a traveller on our trips is around 22-27. Having said that we get plenty of people out of school between 18-20 as well as in the 30’s. We recommend our trips for the ages between 18-39. Our minimum required age is 18, but we do not have a maximum, meaning anyone 18+ can join us. If you are unsure the trip is for you or not, then feel free to contact us and we will answer any questions you have.

Our trips have a mix of adventure, culture, trekking, relaxing and partying, so we cater for everyone. If there are certain activities you don’t want to take part in then thats cool, we can recommend other things for you to do instead.

HOW DO I GET TO THE ACCOMMODATION FROM THE AIRPORT?

As long as you’re arriving within 2 days of the tour start date, we will personally pick you up from the airport and take you back to the accommodation. Closer to the time of the trip, we will send you some instructions on how to find us at the airport.

If it’s more than 2 days before the start date then we will still arrange an airport pickup for you, with one of our local drivers. Again, we’ll let you know details on where to find the driver.

If you are arriving before the start date then we can book you a room at the same accommodation where we start the tour, and you can pay for any extra nights when you get here.

CAN YOU CATER FOR MY DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?

We always do our best to cater for all dietary requirements but please make us aware before you arrive so we can prepare.

We understand that many of you may be vegetarian or vegan. Don’t worry, many of Thailand’s and Sri Lanka’s best dishes will suit you down to the ground.

IS THERE ANY FREE TIME DURING THE TRIP?

In all of our trips, we try to get the perfect balance of amazing activities yet keeping enough chill time so that you can relax, explore the local area, do some shopping or treat yourself to another a massage.

If you feel like you need some more down time, then by all means you don’t have to join us for every activity. We will never pressure you do something you don’t want to do, its your holiday!

HOW MUCH SPENDING MONEY DO I NEED?

The amount of spending money that you will need while traveling on one of our trips is based on a number of different factors. But generally, we recommend that you bring no less than £300 spending money. Obviously, if you like to shop from sunrise to sunset or are the type of person to buy everyone in the group a Tequila shot at any given opportunity then you may need a little more.

It’s important to remember that all activities, accommodation, transport and a bunch of meals are included on all trips so the only things you need spending money for is extra meals, drinks, shopping and maybe a massage here and there!

Your Group Leader will assist you with anything you are unsure of when it comes to spending while you are here and they can assist you with ways to save your money if you are on a strict budget.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO ACCESS/CARRY MY MONEY?

We always recommend when traveling to a new country that you have some form of local currency with you. Having some money exchanged already will give you something to spend at the airport when you land.

There are ATMs available at the airports so you can withdraw more cash as soon as you arrive in their local currency and there are currency exchanges available.

You should let your bank know where you will be travelling to so they allow you to withdraw money abroad, and you should also check how much your bank charges for you to do this. Another great way of taking spending money is to use a prepaid overseas card.

IS THERE A LEVEL OF FITNESS REQUIRED?

Throughout our trips, we will be visiting some viewpoints in various locations to get the best views (believe us its worth the effort). We would recommend an average fitness level would be just fine in order to join us at the top.

If for any reason you can not take part, due to fitness levels or injury that’s fine too, we will recommend other things to do.

If it’s just a little push to get you up there, we will be there to help.

WILL I BE ABLE TO USE MY PHONE ABROAD?

So there are a couple of ways of using your phone while you are over here in Asia so that you can contact your friends and family back at home.

Local SIM card
If you would like to have access to the internet on your smart phone at all times while you are away then we can help you set up a local SIM. In order for us to do that, you are best checking with your phone provider that your phone is unlocked before you come.

A local SIM is normally quite cheap and will give you plenty of data for the month and often international calls too depending on the provider you go for. Most of the places we go to, will have phone signal, other than some of the more rural areas, such as Khao Sok national park where the signal will not be too good.

WIFI
We normally just recommend you pass on taking a local SIM and use the WIFI throughout the trip. All of our accommodations other than the one in Khao Sok national park have free WIFI.

It’s not always going to be the quickest internet speeds, but generally good enough for you to video call back home to friends and family.

WHAT TYPE OF BAG SHOULD I TAKE? SUITCASE Vs BACKPACK

There are advantages to both travelling with a suitcase or a backpack. Here is a few things to consider when wondering which one to go for.

Backpack
They are more lightweight, which means its both easier for you to be moving it around and also means you don’t need as much baggage allowance for your flights.
It can be a bit of a pain getting everything out and then packing it all back up every time you change location, but that’s why we suggest looking for one that has a zip that opens all the way around the outside for easy access.

Generally they are not waterproof. Some come with one, but if not, then maybe grab yourself a waterproof rain cover that sits on top of it. They are cheap and will save all your stuff getting wet. We told you so! At times you will use public transport, such as ferries or trains. Buy a padlock that can be attached to the zips on your backpack.

Suitcase
It is easier getting your stuff in and out of a suitcase, and you can generally get more in them. But that does mean it will be heavier.
It can be difficult getting a suitcase on and off buses and ferries. Dragging a suitcase through the sand is not fun either.

Overall, we would say bring a backpack. Especially if you are traveling between destinations regularly.

One last tip would be to travel light. Most places we go have laundry facilities close by so you can get your clothes washed and ironed for super cheap!

WHAT FOOTWEAR WILL I NEED TO BRING?

On all of our trips we include at least one viewpoint hike or even some trekking in the jungle. We recommend that you bring along with you some comfortable trainers, they should be good enough for the level of walking or trekking we will be doing.

Once you book, we will also send you a packing checklist which has everything you need to bring for your Feel Free trip.
